The GNWT Regulator of oil and gas operations regulates oil and gas activities for the primary purposes of ensuring human safety, environmental protection and the conservation of oil and gas resources. The GNWT Regulator has jurisdiction in the onshore Northwest Territories, with the exception of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region and federal lands, and ensures compliance with the territorial Oil and Gas Operations Act (OGOA) and regulations. National Energy Board (NEB)

The National Energy Board (NEB) performs the same function as the GNWT Regulator for the exploration and production of oil and gas in the offshore Northwest Territories and on federal lands, ensuring compliance with the federal Canada Oil and Gas Operations Act (COGOA) and regulations. In the onshore Northwest Territories in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, the NEB ensures compliance with the territorial Oil and Gas Operations Act (OGOA) and regulations.
